In early December 2022, DC Studios co-CEO and chairman James Gunn asserted on social media that the character Superman was "a big priority, if not the biggest priority" for DC Studios under the leadership of himself and Peter Safran. Later that month, Gunn officially announced that he was actively developing a new Superman film that would be a part of the rebooted DC shared universe slate he was co-developing with producer Peter Safran, who shares the position of CEO and chairman at DC Studios with Gunn himself.
Gunn described the film as focusing on a younger iteration of the character dissociated from the version portrayed by actor Henry Cavill in the DC Extended Universe (DCEU) franchise, which was by that point slated to be reprised in a previously planned sequel to the DCEU film Man of Steel (2013) that was reported to have resumed development just prior to Gunn and Safran assuming their posts at the studio.
Later that day, Variety confirmed that the film would depict Kent as an "inexperienced cub reporter" at the Daily Planet in Metropolis and that Lois Lane would appear as his colleague.
